Description
The hinge between the long “humpback” of Mount Coscerno and Mount of the Hermit is represented by the Gavelli Plains, at an altitude of almost 1,200m: meadows, hayfields flooded at times by water, turkey oak groves with century-old majestic specimens, dolines and ponds.
The small lake of Gavelli is another focal point of the natural and anthropic history of the massif. It is a small marsh, home to newts, frogs and tree frogs, while the field close to the fountain becomes a playground during the August holidays.
What impresses most about the Gavelli plains is the extent of this mountain range which together with Mount Coscerno covers almost 100 square kilometres, for an overall altitude which reaches more than 1,000 metres. This area is regarded by some botanists as the real Umbrian Apennines.
